So I was pushing one side of the galaxy to look for undiscovered stars, and I noticed it was getting harder to find reachable routes. My ship has a 71 ly range unladen but about 65 current. I saw a star a bit out of the way and my route suggested a neutron star to get near it. What could go wrong, right? I knew it was risky and once I got there I couldn't find a way out! The system was found by someone else so it wasn't even worth it. I started thinking about what to do and saw the option for FSD injection. I had 3 vanadium which is required for the basic boost and that's it. I used one and… nothing, the route planner still can't get me there. I dumped my 8 limpets and still not able to jump to the closest star. I watched a video on how to do it and I was supposed to get a blue "boost active" message, so I did it again… Still nothing. I realized that I'm supposed to manually pick the star and planner doesn't work. By the way, those three vanadium was supposed to be for my AFMS repair refill which was empty.
So I risked this one jump to a star that was just within range of my boosted FSD and… I got to my first undiscovered system! Now I see you can't miss it when it happens. Luckily it has planets with vanadium so I farmed some, and I can boost again. Then I noticed there's a neutron star within boosted range, so once I get there I can high tail towards a denser region and get back towards home.
One thing I didn't quite get was how to maximize my range. Dumping my limpets got me a bit of range but it's still something like 66 and max is 71. There is no option to dump fuel, is there? Do I have to burn fuel by jumping back and forth between close stars, and then only refill as much as needed for the next jump and the one after? If I jump to the neutron star I must have extra fuel too and I don't know how much.
Turns out exploration gets quite exciting. I'm 2500 ly from Sol but I feel like I'm in a deep hole and it's hard to get out.
