What is the reason one “needs” to play higher tiers?

I have either unlocked, earned, or bought quite a few higher tiers – including tiers X – but the higher the tier, the worse my performance becomes, so I never fancied playing them. The only reason I even got to them was to be able to earn some bonds, participate in clan activities and special events (like the most recent Onslaught)

My performance on tiers X is indeed horrendous, no debate. But the main reason is not as much I can't play them properly, but mainly that I have no passion for it. For sure, if I tried hard enough, I would be able to produce passable results. But I just have no desire to try-hard. I don't throw out games or play bad deliberately, my skill level on these tiers is just very low

What I did, however, is playing lower tiers, and I loved both the pace and gameplay there, and as I gained experience, I also learnt how play properly and produce decent results. With time I found some platoon comrades who shared my love for lower tiers, and it was both more fun and more effective to play in company, so I gradually played less solo and more platoons

But every so often, some players ridicule me for my terrible tier X results and say many mean things, but one of the points many of them make, is in short that I must play high tiers instead and show my skill there. But I don't understand this. Why is the skill level determined by tiers X only? Plus, the purpose of this game is winning, which is what I am trying to achieve, and I can best achieve it on some very specific tanks and specific circumstances. And I enjoy winning games as much as possible. But people suggest that I should play tanks that I don't excel at, to mediocre results?

Some even say I am unsportsmanlike. Bringing my teams to a victory, instead of playing some tanks where I shall only drag my teams down, is unsportsmanlike?
