Am I traveling correctly?

I want to make sure I'm traveling correctly. I go to the galaxy map, set a destination, then engage my shift drive. It gets all wonky and then I automatically drop out next to a star. Then, without leaving shift drive, I head away from the star, find my destination (e.g. a specific station), navigate to it, and then point that way. Then I use the speed bars on the bottom left to try to correctly time dropping out of shift drive. Do I have that right?

Because sometimes it doesn't show the speed bars, like here:

No approach indicator bars

Right now (in a separate incident), I was stuck at 200km/s with the speed bars showing. This is full throttle and it wouldn't go any faster. I also couldn't drop out without stopping. Eventually I was able to slowly accelerate to a faster speed.
