The common advice i’ve heard is to always wear a helmet, just in case it protects you from a random shot. Some is better than none.
My question is, if you have access to level 4 helmets, is there ever a reason to run level 3?
There are plenty of Level 3 options, from the penis helmet to the ratnik, light helmet, HJELM, etc. Many have high ricochet chance and can stop most pistol caliber rounds
However, currently the elephant in the room is 7.62x39PS
This round ignores level 3 armor, scavs can spawn with it, and players can buy it from level 1.
Boosting from Level 3 to level 4 buys you potentially a PS round being stopped by your helmet, saving your life from the most commonly run round by early-mid level players
In my opinion (after getting domed through level 3 helmet plenty of times) the only reason to run a level 3 helmet is if you genuinely can’t afford a level 4 helmet. In which case, you could still wear one to protect against some rounds, but definitely don’t buy anything more expensive than a penis helmet, and if you’re trying to save weight i’d say ditch the helmet altogether
I’d argue that in the same way level 4 armor is considered the bare minimum for protection against non shitty ammo, a level 4 helmet is the bare minimum for your noggin. I was deceived by the sheer quantity of level 3 helmets that it was good enough considering how rarely you get hit in the head, but if you’re gonna spend the money, you might as well get protection against more than pistols
