For anybody who may be interested and occasional new players wondering about ways to get into AX combat, I would like to offer some tips that I have learned through hard combat the last two-ish weeks.

  1. If you're equipped with the fixed multi cannon weapons, then set your target aiming to "trailing" in the ship menu. It allows you to actually see where your shots will impact your target. It's useless with Guardian Gauss Cannons, but other fixed weaponry with a travel time benefit from this. Can be used in regular combat as well.
  2. When you see an interceptor turning yellow, they're about to use a lightning strike attack. It temporarily slows or disable your craft and is quite annoying. They seem to have a hold on you in midair and circle around you. When you notice that you are going to be attacked with this, turn your thrusters into full reverse. It will let you have a little more control of the situation and still allow you to keep your target on Thargoid for a much higher duration than if you were moving forward, again they seem to hold you in midair so going backwards allows you to take advantage of it. Or just boost away from the thing as fast as possible.
  3. Heatsinks are your friend. The only contradiction I'm having right now is that I have such good thermal vent beam lasers that I don't ever need them in combination with the AX multi cannons. When using Guardian Gauss cannons, you will very often overheat which is not too fun. It's useful when you need to remove caustic substance, but it can really damage your ship if you don't keep it under control.
  4. When you destroy an interceptors last heart down to 20%, just lay into it. You have a small window before it will get it's last shields up and it will just waste a little more time, forget about overheating! You can repair later, just kill the bug!

For anybody who might be wondering, I am using a moderately engineered Chieftan with 2 Large Enhanced AX Multi Cannons, 1 Medium AX Enhanced MC, and 3 small beam lasers with long range and thermal vent. Currently using 3 heat sinks but planning on dropping them. Did not realize the Xeno scanner allows just the basic scans as well, thought it was useless because I can never get a full scan.

Now I have some questions for those more experienced than me. Can normal point defense modules destroy caustic missiles? I read somewhere that they are ineffective. And for the regular human AX weaponry, can they be engineered? I know guardian modules can't be but I would love to engineer my enhanced AX MC's. I have only been using them tonight but I have found it to be quite a fun challenge.
