I ended up typing more than I thought so
TL;DR: I think Tarkov doesn't experience an abnormal amount of hacking in their games. I think its just more impactful because dieing carries more weight to it than in other games. I personally don't like the guessing game of: "Did I die legit or was it a cheater?" I am prepared for salty comments because I know this is a sore topic here. I felt like an honest discussion about it with constructive feedback would be better for someone looking for answers rather than them seeing "They just need to re-code the whole game" over and over.
Alittle about me:
I'm fairly new to the community I engage on posts here and there but only been playing this for about a year now. I have a background in network security idk if that translates to anti-cheat measures in videogames. I'm always interested in seeing cheats to begin with but I don't typically hear many people give good solutions. Typically its just "they need to rewrite their whole game" which I feel like someone who gives that answer just doesn't know what they are saying or maybe I'm just missing some critical info. Anyways I'd like to hear about some of the more technical side of securing games and if that is more or less similar to securing an office network.
Topical
So I guess the point of me opening this disscussion up would be is this game suffering from an abnormal amount of cheating or is it just more noticable because the times when you do run into a cheater its affects you over the course of a few games? If it is abnormal then what more could BSG do to curb it?
Every popular game gets cheaters that flood their game: DBD, Call of Duty, WoW, Overwatch, Smite, League of Legends, GTA etc. The thing I think that makes it more noticable in this game however is the fact that when you die you actually go backwards in progress (atleast early on). In those other games if you die or lose you just respawn or move on to the next game.
Like I said in the TLDR the main thing I hate about the cheating is it makes it hard to tell what I got wrong and why I died. If I get killed seemingly out of nowhere was it a cheater? or was someone watching me for a while and waited for a good shot? At the end of the day its only a game and its a fun game with a great concept.
Ending thoughts
I just think all the "cheaters running rampant" talk could be overblown. One of the main things I was taught in my network defence classes was if there is technology someone will beable to crack it. While I've only been playing for a year roughly I do think there is a cheater issue. I don't think BSG is doing nothing about it because its not exactly an issue that can be patched in overnight. My suggestion though both would be dangerous and potentially sketchy would be to either a.) find whoever the main cheat provider is and see if they are willing to work on your game to improve the cheat detection. b.) get a few of the cheats onto a secure laptop and have your coder try and see if he can reverse engeineer the hacks then just adjust accordingly. Idk how cheats work generally but I assume the person writing the scripts at the very least know how the anti-cheats work. As for actually getting the hacks is also ify because you risk them getting access even deeper than you intended.
Idk how practial either of those options are or if it is possible if its worth the time and money.
Would love to hear your thoughts and to tell me how stupid I am 🙂
