We all know that the on foot experience feels like a tacked on aspect of this flight Sim. It's like the chief complaint of Odyssey besides the initial performance issues. Many beleive that a big solution to this problem is to add ship interiors, but seeing the drip feed of content thus far, I think it is way too much to ask from the development team at Frontier. It would take too much effort, and they probably wouldn't be given the funding to do it.

So what is an easier ask? EVA. All Frontier has to do is add another black screen "disembark" transition, but do it for us anytime we want. So I can go out into deep space and be allowed to leave the ship. We already have a jetpack we use on planet surfaces, so just reuse that and let us fly around in space. This would offer the same freedom as ship interiors, letting the CMDR leave their chair at any moment.

However, they would need to give us a reason to EVA. So far we would have the freedom of ship interiors, but not the content. Thus Frontier would need to think of some easy modifications of current missions and new ones entirely. Here are some EVA activities that I think wouldn't bee too hard for them to make:

  • GTA: Dangerous. A new piracy meta: after disabling a ships thrusters, you can slow it down then EVA outside and literally steal their whole ship. As long as you are near enough to the cockpit window, maybe you can shoot through it with on foot weapons to kill the pilot, then enter the ship via pop up menu (maybe they could add a lock pick mechanic but they don't have to). Once youve stolen a ship, you can take it to your fleet carrier or an anarchy station. (cops will not like it if you show up in stolen ship). The glass will be broken so it adds risk and the timing is important.

  • Ship Salvage: Add derelict ships floating in space that you can EVA to and use the arc cutter to open external panels for loot. Maybe even have some occupied escape pods that we can release from the outside and scoop up with our ship after. Also, they could even let us power up the ship and take it for ourselves. Our main ship would be stored at nearest station and we would take the fixer upper into our possession.

  • Ability to repair damages on our ships manually by floating outside and using a new "repair tool" or something.

  • Abandon ship during combat, allowing for some funny Battlefield 4 type maneuvers like "Rendezook" (jump out, shoot enemy with with a missile launcher, jump back in). Could also let us call apex shuttle to pick us up if we are lost in space with no ship.

  • Zero- G space battles. This would be kinda hard due to AI pathtracing, but they could add some really interesting "sphere of combat" battles within existing space conflict zones. Like, my ship is being run by a crew membe and I decide to EVA out and join the fight among enemies that are also EVA…perhaps protecting some kind of smaller objectives. Maybe when a capital class ship comes in I can EVA to the turrets and use arc cutter to disable them. AI NPCs would be guarding them. This would mix on foot very nicely with ships.

  • Slippery Bounties. Make the NPCs sometimes value their lives enough to EVA before their ship explodes. Then, make it hard to target them with the ship forcing us to have to chase them in space using our suit instead. So then you can either kill them or stun them, then call a "human collector limpet" to take the body back to your ship to deliver to the jail.

    This is all something that I beleive even modders could do (if they had the tools). It's far less demanding than designing interiors for every ship and working out how the engine could handle "mobile rooms" and such…
