FA off and response curves for sticks(newbie here)

So I got 2 vkb gladiators(my first joysticks ever) and I am really enjoying learning to use them.

I basically have spent my first 20 hours in elite just trying to get better and better and combat and flying in general(no space sim experience before this). I learned a few tricks and then tried I tried FA off and holy crap, it's difficult. I am going through some videos on youtube to teach me FA off a little more and after a couple hours I'm definitely better than I was but I know this is going to be a very long road and a lot of time required to be pretty good at.

So I am asking people who fly with FA 100% of the time or close to it, do you use any response curves in your joystick software? I only messed with it once and went back to default. FA off seems to be all about tiny little movements a lot of the time and I felt like when I tried it that it did give me more control, but I also don't want to learn that way if it's going to handicap my ability down the road when/if I get good at it.

Any other advice for an aspiring FA off pilot?

Thanks!
