Now, before you knee-jerk downvote, hear me out
We all like drawn-out firefights, right?
Those sexy exchanges of gunfire back and forth, as you and your opponent attempt to pin, flank, and kill each other
Yet, as the game develops, players are gonna become less and less resistant to gunfire
– plate hitboxes
– update to health system
– addiction (nerfing pain meds)
This will encourage slower and slower play
How do we keep sexy, drawn out fights is players are slowing down (becoming easier to hit) and also more vulnerable to gunfire?
The answer, is to hit players in the accuracy department
We are seeing this with the introduction of the “aiming deadzone” (hopefully coming Thursday)
But I think another point of address is “hold breath”
Reasoning:
1- realism (my “fans” are rolling their eyes at this point, im sure)
Shooting irl, there is NO way to entirely eliminate movement of your sights
And holding your breath is BAD shooting fundamentals
(Irl technique is controlling/leaning your breathing pattern, and taking shots at the natural peak or valley of your breathing cycle, but never “holding” your breath)
THE most stable shooting position that isnt supported (bipods, or resting on an object) is prone, with a sling set up in a specific, tightened manner
And even THEN, you can literally see your sights bump up and down from your own heartbeat
Tldr, its literally impossible, short of using an inanimate rest, to remove all movement of your sights
2- gameplay
So, as i mentioned, its reasonable to expect the game to slow down
Who here cant put their mouse on someone’s unmoving head and click with little to no effort?
Im guessing nobody
Shooting in game is MUCH easier than irl
Thats why a lot of realistic shooters take steps to inhibit player accuracy
– aggressive sway
– aiming deadzones
– (any others people can think of?)
To make player in-game performance, resemble a bit more if an irl performance
For example, with hold breath as it is currently, its fairly easy to land a 500m headshot against an unmoving target, while STANDING
Hold breath removes “all” sight movement, regardless of stance
A 500m headshot while standing is near fucking god-level, from a realistic standpoint
Now, you might say
“Maddog, 500m engagements are rare, why does this really matter”
This is true,
Most combat occurs closer in
But believe me, any sway that you cant avoid via hold-breath, will impact your accuracy, even much closer in
And thats what we want
We want drawn out fights, because dudes partially behind cover should be a bit of a challenge to hit, especially quickly/rushed shots
Dudes at long range, should be REQUIRED to take the time to get a good position/stance, to effectively make that shot
Not being able to craft them sucks. Especially when everyone I talk to about it…
