I had an idea pop into my head about a potential game mechanic for us explorers. What if similar to the whole exobiology thing, we could take surface samples of the planet that we are on to get extra rewards or something and also maybe add a little more to exploration gameplay. Basically, the player would kneel down and scoop some snow or dirt into a container or drill out a chunk of rock or ice and take it back to the ship to analyze it. Then it would list the information found by analyzing the sample like, "This sample contains 80 percent water ice and 20 Percent CO2 ice" or "Mainly consists of silicates and various metal oxides but also contains small amounts of sulfur" or something normal like that most of the time but every once in a while it would say that the soil is very rich in gold, platinum, and other precious metals or low-temperature diamonds and painite or that there is underground water which would then significantly boost the value of the planet when the data is turned in at a station.
This is just an interesting idea that I had for a game mechanic because I would like it if there were more things to do on planetary surfaces when out exploring. Let me know what you think about it.
