Lox farming still feels a bit iffy

I've got my little lox farm set up in the plains but I've noticed it doesn't seem as consistent as boar or wolf farming. Even happy lox tend to not mate very often, and calves don't come along often either.

My current pen can support 11+ lox, but even if I cull a few sometimes they won't breed when happy or they won't produce a calf even if I see them mate. I'm also sure to stick around after I feed them until I see a calf or they're hungry again.

Curious if anyone else has experienced this or if your lox farms are pumping out calves.
