I restarted for the Mistlands. Something drastic was changed with the swamp biomes that makes the iron age far worse than it used to be. Crypts are less frequent, draugr spawners are more frequent, and surtling spawners are less frequent, making swamps far less profitable overall. Also, the reduced spawn range of swamps (8000m to 6000m) has halved the amount of swamp that is actually in the world. The density of crypts has been halved in all the seeds that I have checked using valheim-map.world.
If we do the math:
π80002 – π15002 = ~194,000,000m2
π60002 – π15002 = ~106,000,000m2
That's a 45% reduction in the amount of swamp globally. This further compounds the reduction in the density of crypts by about half. This means the obtainable crypt iron was reduced by approximately 73% with the most recent updates.
While I really do appreciate the increased density of mistlands territory, I feel like the iron age was already problematic, given the game's density of recipes that require iron, and the decision to nerf the density of crypts and surtling spawns grossly exaggerate the impact of industry on a world. –While we play with a rampage server that we plumb for resources when our world is starting to get lean, the decision to nerf swamps like this from both directions expands a tier of resource acquisition, which was already fairly unreasonable to levels that are no longer in the realm of sanity.
I'm fine with the density of crypts, but if you are going to aggressively dial in the swamp generation to the tune of halving to total land area that swamps take up in the game, and halve the number of crypts in every remaining swamp, crypts should have at least had their room generation tweaked to make them more expansive than they were before to offset some of the impact this is going to have on multiplayer servers. I think an aggregate 30% increase in the number of iron on average from a crypt is reasonable given how aggressive this decision was.
