I sail IRL. I’ve been doing it all my life. So refreshing to play a game that gets it right—but not so right as to be overly frustrating. The longboat/karve points to weather a little better than it probably should, but nonetheless, a damn fine incorporation by developers who have clearly sailed before.
EDIT—I used some sailing terminology that might not make sense to the uninitiated. A modern, sloop rig boat will sail and make way 45 degrees off the wind. Assume a compass. Assume the direction the wind blows from is zero degrees. A modern boat will sail 45 degrees off of zero either direction from the wind. So—on a modern boat, out of a 360 degree compass, one can sail on 270 degrees from wind direction. A tenth century karve or longboat would probably require wind across the boat or behind the boat—90 degrees or more from zero—wind direction. The karve/longboat behaves like a modern boat—not a true representation of a Viking boat, but awesome nonetheless. “Pointing to weather” means how close one can be to the wind as an angle and still move forward on a heading.
Not being able to craft them sucks. Especially when everyone I talk to about it…
