So I posted this few days ago, and all I gotta say is I was wrong.

I listened to a few suggestions in the comments, most notably NOT trying to take on every enemy I can and just focus on getting iron as fast as possible and well, I've got full iron gear now and the Swamp, while still somewhat challenging, is no where near as difficult now.

Thanks for sticking to your guns people and telling me I was wrong. I will say however that the game could be a bit better about suggestions. Like it would have been tremendously helpful if the raven popped up as soon as you venture into the swamps to tell you that's it is not wise to fight enemies without iron gear (if you're a noob).
