This is not about the flaws, but ideas that could be fairly simple to add and would increase playtime as well as decrease grind.
1) enemies drop material/gear
How is this not a thing? It happens when we blow up ships, why does it not happen when we down opponents. Either they should just drop materials or we should be able to body scavenge and scan for data.
2) on foot and ship crossover missions
These needs to be done the most, otherwise all that odyssey will be is a second game stapled on. You can use whatever adverbs to describe said stapling on. However, crossover missions would integrate the two gameplay mechanics. One easy example would be a ship retrieval mission. Or even ship delivery missions for newer players to get a taste.
3) LEAST LIKELY BUT MOST AWESOME
Pirate fooking stations. With fooking space fooking pirates. Not more generic space aryan looking people. Degenerate space people. With actual piracy missions. This is where you should get illegal missions, not from some idiot standing in the middle of a high security space station shouting their willingness to pay someone to do something illegal.
Finally, as to why you need pirate stations. Is this:
Organic. On foot. Fooking. P. V. P.
Pirate stations would allow you to draw weapons in the station.
Shoot other cmdrs.
And teabag their corpses.
