Unpopular opinion (apparently): Elite is still pretty awesome

I've been playing since 2014. Basically got VR because of this game. Don't play as much as I used to but started back up recently and have still been enjoying it. My unpopular opinions:

  • Odyssey planets are awesome. Apparently the latest post from Frontier about "tiling" has people claiming the game is dead now because frontier won't fix. This is one of those 1% problems where the fix is nowhere near worth the cost. From my experience (10,000+ in game, many 100's in Odyssey) I have yet to see the issue at the heart of the bug. I've seen the screenshots, this is not an "I don't believe it exists" post, but it is clearly rare so the idea that Frontier isn't going to re-write their entire procedural generation system because of a bug that might effect 1 in 1000 planets actually makes good sense.
  • Relative to other titles Elite is still top-tier. It's scope, graphics, gameplay are all on par with anything else out there in the genre. Sometimes reading the negative posts on here and other forums reminds me of my mother, whom would still find something to bitch about with me if I was literally Jesus Christ. I think Frontier could literally have actual spaceships that people could fly through the galaxy in and a loud minority of this community would complain.
  • The reason there isn't any VR for first person is because no VR dev ANYWHERE has managed to make a decent first person VR shooter experience that can translate across both VR and non VR platforms/experiences. I say this as somebody who has invested a lot of time and $$$ into VR equipment and titles. My ONLY suggestion to Frontier here would be to make a simple switch that would allow you to turn on/off VR quickly as I still like to fly in VR but I switch to 2D for first person mode and doing so through the graphics settings can be cumbersome.

I'm not saying Frontier walks on water. I'm not saying Elite doesn't have room for improvement. I am saying that I've been OK with Frontier's direction. Their decisions have been hard but also sensible. I still believe they are working to make Elite's future brighter and better. For a long, long time prior to the most recent nonsense, the complaint has always been about depth. In my mind the changes they have made and the direction they are moving in is to specifically address THAT complaint. The planets are pretty enough, varied enough. The galaxy is big enough and there are enough systems and features. Now is the time to focus on the the depth. Communication has never been Frontier's strong suit but they have consistently made good progress and have always operated in good faith with the community. Anyway, I'm in for the long haul – I love this game and I hope Frontier doesn't spend too much time lamenting the sour grapes of a few loud and disgruntled members of this community.

TL;DR; Elite is a fantastic game with a lot of life left. Shitting on something is easy, supporting constructively is hard.
