Using your profession in Online Discussions

I have a question about something that is more prevalent in the FD's forums but I have seen it here and that is stating your profession in a post. For example, how many times have you seen someone state "I'm a Software Engineer and …." or "In my 25 years as a Game Developer I have never …." – you hopefully get the drift. Why do people do it, do they honestly think anyone is going to believe them, even if it is true? Does it make you believe their statement more if they quote their career background? Lets be honest, there is no way to verify the claim of being a Software Engineer or the like, so why the hell state it. The funny thing is if you query their claim they get very defensive about it and immediately attack you for doubting them.

The TL:DL version – Does someone stating their professional career or position enhance their argument online?
