I've been thinking about this a lot lately and haven't seen anything on it yet. I think the devs should make some smaller craft-able planters that we can place and grow things in any biome. I see so many people stay in the meadows, or make the anti-immersive portal to the plains farm. Yes we can build in any biome, but you can't really stay there solely. What I want is a viable way to live in any biome I can conquer.
So here is my proposed solution: Maybe we buy an item from a trader and that allows of to put down planters. These planters would be something like a 2×2 or 1×4 area with fertile soil. The tradeoff is sacrificing yield quantity for the ability to farm anywhere. Maybe the planters have to be within a fire's radius, or maybe even with the Ashlands coming up we can procure some ultra fertile volcanic soil. You could still have portals to your massive Purdue style GMO monstrosities, but also live humbly in the mountains if you so choose.
Not being able to craft them sucks. Especially when everyone I talk to about it…
