What is the best way to do exobiology out in the black?

Okay so i decided that i finally want to leave the bubble for some time. I want to do exobiology because it's relaxing and pays very nicely. The thing is, that i have never done exobiology on random. What i mean by this is i only followed a preset path on cmdrs tool box near the bubble.

What i want to know is what is the best method or approach to do it? Should i just randomly jump into systems and fss for bio signals? Should i be the first one to visit a system for an extra bonus? (idk if that exists).

And if i discover a system with bio signals, are there any planet types and plant types that are not worth the time?
Should i scan all plants on a planet for a potential bonus? (Again idk if that bonus exists).

Someone willing to help and give me a basic overhaul of how these things work could be very nice. I am also aware that writing about everything would take ages, so just the most important stuff.
