Personal Experience:
The 122 TM has a surprisingly strong platform; solid gun, good depression, 400 alpha, usable armor profile and some mobility issues. Amusingly the 122 TM places consistently towards the top average DPG for tier 8 medium tanks on tomato.gg for NA / EU for 60D~ tank stats – Considering how monstrously bad the DPM is, this is highly counter intuitive.
The three most memorable aspects of this experience were;
Bad mobility: Theoretically additional grousers is more efficient for better mobility (turbocharger tanks.gg and grousers tanks.gg). But there isn't really a point to buffing the mobility in the first place, the mobility will still have issues. Additional grousers fixes some of the terrain resistances issue but doesn't do anything else, whereas turbocharger gets us a higher top limits but were still stuck with horrendous terrain resistances. When it comes to flexing, there is no noticeable change with either choice. To me the mobility is unfixable and it appears to be a trap to even try.
Poor DPM: This is a good and bad feature. The good – Were not poking as often which keeps us out of the line of fire for SPGs and TDs. The bad – For faster battles were struggling to do damage due to long reloads.
Platform survivability: While it's certainly not best in class, the 122 TM has just enough of everything to work. Flat on the turret is strong up to 300 pen and the UFP is solid against 200 pen. The side armor does have a turret ring bulge, but it's covered by spaced armor so unless folks know to specifically shoot for it – Sidescraping is perfectly reasonable to attempt.
The only reliable hole in the armor profile is the cupolas. Does it suck to get shot there? Yes. Is that really a problem considering the rest of the armor package? Not really.
The more frequent issue with survivability are the frontally mounted fuel tanks. Penetrating hits to the hull have a good chance of damaging them.
Overall, I'm of the opinion the 122 TM is easy to play – The high alpha, lack of exposure time and high pen works well for peek-a-boom fights at mid range. So long as were not asking for miracles from the mobility, and not exposing ourselves unnecessarily during reloads the 122 TM will perform consistently.
