Audio Tip – Dynamic Range

Just wanted to share something that I found recently.

I was constantly getting surprised by people near me. I could barely hear footsteps at all unless they were right next to me, even with comtacs/etc. At the same time, my own gunfire was DEAFENING. Watching streams, all the streamers seemed to have amazing hearing powers and always knew exactly where close enemies were, which boggled my mind since I could barely hear anything.

Turns out there is something called Dynamic Range that is a property of your audio output. Basically, it makes loud sounds louder, and quiet sounds quieter.

If you're having these same problems, there is no single solution. There should be a setting either in your audio driver, or your headset software that can limit dynamic audio range. Mine was in Steelseries engine. Google is probably your friend in this regard.

Since I've changed it, I can easily hear footsteps very clearly, fairly far away and it's improved my gameplay dramatically.

So hopefully, this helps some of my deaf brothers and sisters out there
