I know a lot of complaints have already been made about how the ballistas shoot their owners, and while I do think that's dumb, I'm not actually writing this to add to that pile. I think what's even worse is that the ballistas are actually just useless even beyond that issue.
They practically can't hit any moving target. Anything smaller or faster than a troll is probably going to easily dodge almost every shot from a ballista unless it completely stands still. Out of a 20-shot ammo capacity, you'd be lucky if 1 or 2 of those shots hit anything other than the ground.
Fortunately I think there's a fairly easy way to rework them so that they're useful. Instead of tuning the tracking higher until they're an OP snipe-machine that can shoot dragons out of the sky, instead increase their aggro range and give the projectiles an AoE damage effect on impact, effectively turning them into a sort of artillery piece. That way, even when they inevitably miss their target, they'll still damage it. That will also make them more effective as crowd control weapons during raids.
Not being able to craft them sucks. Especially when everyone I talk to about it…
