Tar is a much needed resource if you are a player that enjoys beautiful buildings. So why is it so obnoxious to obtain it? Don't get me wrong, I know you can do it pretty fast, by hopping on different islands and draining tar pits left and right. But in return, you will ravage the landscape with gigantic holes on the ground. It's boring, ugly and kinda pointless. If it were some OP resource, yeah ok. But it's a purely aesthetic resource. Why can't we realiably farm it? Waiting for the growths to spawn and kill them is laughable. It's so slow that if I used a raft to move around and look for tar pits to drain it would be faster.
My suggestion: make the Tar blobs slowly spawn on the center of the pit and slowly move towards the edges. This way you can always come back to the same place and farm some Tar.
Alternative: another item sink. Throw junk in the pit, and it slowly converts the items into Tar and also slowly sends it towards the edges of the pit.
Not being able to craft them sucks. Especially when everyone I talk to about it…
