Methodology

A German streamer called totallyAcRo (give him some love: https://www.youtube.com/c/totallyAcRo/videos ) found out that the boiler side of Customs has certain spots for 50m to 300m and the textures for each concrete slab on the floor has perfect 5m distance. The website https://mapgenie.io/tarkov/maps/customs and the built in sniping radius tool confirms this find. Making this the perfect spot to test sniper scopes. The picture below should illustrate where exactly, if you want to test on your own.

Customs sniper scope testing grounds

My screen resolution is 1920x1080px and my FOV is set to 50. I took screenshots at the spots of 50m, 100m, 150m, 200m, 250m and 300m for all the scopes in the game aiming at the Administration Gate. The only scope with a functional range finder from 100m to 400m is the PSO 1M2-1. With this knowledge I was able to mark the height of the player model for 100m on the wall at the gate. With the help of Photoshop I then cropped the parts of the gate and the player height marking, converted it to a Smart Object in order to scale it lossless up and down. I put this "player-height-reference-snippet" as a rescaled semitransparent layer above the half of my screenshots respectively the gate – only to find out, that the range finder curve is for all the scopes always the same (… I'm no optics guy).

The curve of the PSO 1M2-1 extended to 50m

The snippet as rescaled layer

First reference estimated with the snippet

Knowing this made it pretty easy to proceed. I made a template of my 50m-300m-standing-model-reference which I only needed to check with one or two of my screenshots for the remaining scopes with the "player-height-reference-snippet" and scale it accordingly. Btw. I used a sky as a backdrop in the final pictures. It's just better for recognition.

Since this is a pixel based estimation based on the PSO 1M2-1, it leaves a certain mistake. Also I have to admit, I did not test my work for all the scopes. But it should be useable anyways. If you test it, consider "SW_Tower's accuracy and scope guide" and his points about ammo range inconsitency ( https://forum.escapefromtarkov.com/topic/100516-a-guide-long-distance-rangefinding-and-aiming/ ).

As a side effect I found out, that the magnification numbers in the scope titles are misleading. My interpretation is that the distance of the eye of the player and the plane of the reticle differs greatly for every scope, gun and mount. The Eotech Vudu and the Valday PS-320 are both 1x and 6x magnification scopes. But the Vudu is closer to the eye of the player, which makes it a bigger magnification in the FOV. Also even if you compare for example a Valday on a M4A1 and on an AKM with a mount results in different distances of eye to reticle, which makes the reticle size in the FOV different. And yes this applies to every scope. In theory this must result in different mouse sensitivities then. Well I did not test this. But my conclusion according this is: Stick with one sniping setup!

If you have any question or find any major mistake leave a comment. I try my best to answer and update this post.

Otherwise happy SBIH sniping.
