Don't you feel that roads are kinda pointless at the moment? That carts aren't being used to their fullest potential? That there could be more to life than portals and using carts as a skateboard while being over encumbered? Is there a quiet voice in your head, that says: "portals kinda kill the exploration aspect of the game"?
There were many great ideas posted in this subreddit for how roads and transportation could generally change.
I borrowed some of these ideas and combined them with my own to create simple, but useful overhaul, that should make creating roads an interesting goal for players.
Why?
What can be changed or improved?
Many of you have already said: paths should reward player for building and using them.
In my opinion, depending on the type of the path, there should be few bonuses, that player gets:
Road markers on the map and minimap.
Roads could be marked on the map, so during transport you would always use the quickest and most comfortable way to the destination. To avoid the clutter, you should be able to mark the start point of the road and the end point with your hoe (or a hammer).
I'd love to know what you think and learn some other ideas too.
