Yo, I want to bring an interesting subject
When I was learning the game, I was often running into the direction of "distant" firefights and I often got shot. I didn't think much about it, just "hmm, it's not wise to be running into firefights, there are always people even if you think it's somewhere else"
Out of curiosity, despite wearing in-game headset, I installed a booster of different frequencies (software) Mostly because my irl headset isn't that great, for example – when we both with my freind didn't take headsets but he had a irl dj-tier headphones, he was hearing footsteps which I didn't.
I can't say it changed something dramatic, often it just boosted the environement to the point of being unpleasant, I'd say that 1 in 5 games had an ambient sound that was obstructing the footsteps and movements a bit so playing with the settings of this software helped with hearing things and other games were usually clear and more pleasant to listen without the boost.
What it helped me with tho is the topic of this thread – I hear BANG BANG BANG, a very close firefight just one street away… when I turned out this soft, it seemed much further away. I had peltors equipped I think. So I think, that sometimes a distant gunfire might really be closer than you think
