Please note, this isn't a pity-post, so please don't downvote if it seems so.
I just grinded for a few days to get enough money for the Krait MK II. After buying it I had about 200,000 credits left. I noticed this was nowhere near the insurance rebuy of ~2.5 million. I decided to run some passenger missions and loe and behold one of the passengers was apparently wanted in many systems, which I only noticed when I was near a station. I was hoping and praying I wouldn't get scanned, and I got scanned many times. I was shot down, and my only ship left was my first sidewinder, which I hadn't used since I started playing the game.
I have about 800,000 credits and a sidewinder to my name.
It might sound kind of silly and unrealistic, but your old ships should be able to be rebought if you can't afford the insurance on it.
I was just starting to enjoy this game. Too bad it's over.
