In the recent podcast "We say things" Episode 189 the DotA 2-Talent and caster "Synderen" argues, that a more even distribution of The Internationals-pricepool inside the DPC would attract more organisations and sponsors into the scene with more foreseeable, reliable return on investment.
Currently, 80% of the entire DPC's pricemoney per year is inside The International´s pricepool and from that 80%, 75% goes to the Top 3.
Therefor DotA 2's proscene is essentialy a "lottery ticket" to get to TI.
SynderN says that:
„The way Org´s invest into DotA 2 depends on the exposure and what they get in return, with how tournaments are structured, with how pricepool is structured. The distribution of DotA 2's pricepool is symbiotic with the willingness of Org's and Sponsors to invest into the scene." (Cf. "We say things" Episode 189)
"If you are an org and you say: "We want to get into a new game with a budget of 1 million Dollars" – Who is going to pick DotA? – You re getting a return on investment if your team does well at TI and in basicly every other situation you lose. Otherwise you could get into CS:GO, into COD, where there is more regular return on investment." (Cf. "We say things" Episode 189)
Therefor he suggest: Change the distribution for the pricemoney within the fiscal year. "Instead of one tournament where there is 80% of the pricepool, what if TI was 35% or 40%? It would still be massivly the biggest tournament, but then throughout the year, teams have more chances of making a reliable living from playing and orgs get a more reliable return on investment. […]
The uneven pricepool distribution is a left-over from the first TI´s, where there was no pricemoney for the bottom 8." (Cf. "We say things" Episode 189)
The pricepool-distribution works in a trickel-down-effect according to the other podcast-member and Talent "SunsFan":
- "The Org´s and the sponsors will get more involved, if the teams don´t rely on one tournament (The International)."
- "From that, players will get more money."
- "From that, it might not be worth it for players to matchfix."
