Can’t figure out engineering properly

I've looked for videos (most are old/using different interface). I've searched but can't find the answers to even my simplest questions.

I unlocked Farseer. Got the materials needed to upgrade FSD Jump distance to level 1. Did it (well, I thought I did). Went to Dav's Hope at someone's suggestion and after a ton of flailing about trying to figure out how to use an SRV, eventually picked up some Chemical Processors needed for level 2. Went to engineering bay. Even though I had the mats, level 2 wasn't unlocked. All I could do was do level 1, again (why? I already upgraded it. This is part of what's confusing me. In most games I've played you unlock upgrades one step at a time; upgrading to L2 requires L1 to be upgraded first. That doesn't seem to work here, so clearly I'm missing some vital piece of information.)

Somewhere I saw something about "reputation" with Engineers. I tried to find out online how to check my reputation with Farseer, but everything I saw that even addressed the subject was based on an old UI. (They said use the right side module, Status, engineering icon — but that does not exist in my version of the game).

I think I'm playing Odyssey version, if that makes a difference.

Is there a concise, direct source for my version of the game that explains all of this?
