So I watched a Twitch streamer the other week (guy called Malic_VR) and he was talking about the lore and the story and the narrative or whatever we're calling it for Elite Dangerous, and I was kind of in shock. He was talking about factions and Thargoids and other alien species and this was all stuff I'd heard of, but it had never entered into the world as I saw it through the windows of my ships. To me, for many hundreds of hours, Elite has been a game about trading, blowing shit up, engineering ships and scanning planets. But apparently there's all this other stuff out there?
It felt like finding out that Euro Truck Simulator 2 had a whole built in GTA style component that I'd just missed out on for years hauling beans to Liverpool.
The question is though, how do you get into all these stuff? I mean I'm mates with all the engineers, I drop in on the odd CG, plenty of factions like me, I've got rank with all the navies. How do I take all these senseless grinding I've been doing and point it in the direction of interesting and significant events?
I see that on the roadmap the new updates are also narrative focussed. So it makes me think I should get involved, if only for the chance to see some cool stuff.
Am I going to have to shoot an alien? Is that the thing?
It feels like this is a fundamental, and really pretty cool aspect of the game, but maybe it could be good to have some pointers as to where to start looking for ways into it.
