The best way to plant crops as dense and fast as possible?

First of: vanila game.

I was experimenting a bit with different techniques of planting that would make best use of space and at the same time is easy and fast.

What I found is that planting them in straight line is the best solution and require the least attention. I rotate my character in right direction then open inventory, I lift my mouse, close inventory and start walking forward and spam LMB at the same time.

Above method is very fast and easy but spacing between crops is decent and they can be placed closer together and still have enough room to grow.

One of my approaches was to enable walking mode and click every second to plant them closer together but it requires you to measure time between clicks yourself – if you spam click they will be placed too close.

This also takes much more time and attention but on average I was able to plant 50% more crops in the same area.
