It's true! For a while, I just refused to use gold ammo. I had a whole variety of reasons:
"I'm too broke to afford firing gold"
"I hate getting spammed with gold, and I refuse to inflict the same suffering onto others"
"It's complicated adding the idea of "should I be firing gold or standard" all the time on top of the rest of the game"
But these reasons sucked. I had endless arguments from the back of my high horse, and then I got into CW at the end of 2020.
And naturally, I needed to load gold ammo. Duh. It's Clan wars. And it makes the game SO MUCH EASIER!
Now, I don't mean easy in the sense that "lol gold ammo is easy mode". I mean that I was removing my own handicap.
After all, I had already memorized hundreds of tank armor models, the penetration and alpha of most of those tanks, the layouts of maps, the speeds of various tanks, the only things I struggled with were spotting mechanics (but I'm a heavy main anyway) and sometimes, map positioning when everyone is spread out very oddly.
(For example, never go to a flank alone "so there's at least someone there" because you'll just die, go to the other side and steamroll the enemies there!)
And what would happen? I'd go to a spot, get into position, look for a weakspot, and I'd bounce 40 shells because I refuse to fire gold at the type 4 heavy on the enemy team. And after CW was over, it just clicked. I know where to shoot, I know when to shoot, I know how to position myself, but it's all worthless if I'm not going to play WG's game the way they intend me to, is it?
So, I use gold now. If I see a tank with armor, gold. If a tank has identical gold and standard rounds like the type 4 and type 5, I even put gold in the first slot so it's loaded by default. I've just stopped caring, really.
And hell, it's cheaper to fire one gold round that actually pens than it is to fire 10 standard rounds that bounce, lol
Do I like doing this, though? Well, not really. I don't like the direction the game has turned towards, where tanks have ridiculously small weakspots, and you're just expected to load gold anytime you need to kill something that has armor. But that's how it is, and I'm done handicapping myself due to the vain hope that someday WG is going to undo this mess.
I've also either sold or changed every tank I owned with a derp gun, because my precious splash damage is gone now. Yeah, I fire AP in the FV4005, what're you gonna do about it? This is what happens when you take away my splash damage, now I'm part of the problem that used to piss me off so much.
And hey, speaking of that, I don't get as annoyed by gold anymore. No longer am I getting unfairly molested by ammo that I can't use myself, now it's simply fair. Object 430 hits me with HEAT? Whatever, here's a nice fat 600 alpha gold AP shell.
