Am I missing something with the FSS?

I can't afford a DSS (just started the game), and I've watched multiple videos on exploration, but I seem to be completely failing to understand the FSS.

First, the help said, basically, "tune using ??", which tells me something isn't mapped — but for the life of me I cannot figure out what that is. I have the left and right scan actions mapped (so I can move along the spectrum, which doesn't appear to do anything at all), but next to "Tuning" it still says "??"

Also, I never get any of those "symmetry" indicators, no matter what I zoom in on. Clearly none of these videos explained it at a low enough level for me to grasp. All I can do is zoom in on a planet and see what it is ("High metal content world", and a bunch of stats on the right). Is that all there is to it? Does that somehow earn me any credits?

That doesn't even include all the "Energy Tuning Failed", etc. messages I get when I try to zoom in on something that isn't clearly a planet or a space station. I have no idea what to do with those signals.

I feel like I'm constantly having the ask the most basic questions that even the most rudimentary videos assume you already know. I do have a learning disability caused by a seizure decades ago, but no game I have ever played has ever caused me to feel like my brain is deteriorating like this one.
