Finally convinced my wife to try a new playthrough with the nomap and noportals command enabled after we more or less had a Valheim burnout since last winter. And wow…. it's almost just as exciting as the very first playthrough, with all the added complexity of not having a high tech GPS minimap guiding you around and the increased fear of dying (and not knowing where you died!)
We're only into day 31 with the majority of time spent on building paths in every direction and building small outposts. But we're starting to get a slight idea of how the starter island is shaped and where Black Forest is located. Still haven't really figured out how to use Yggdrasil to navigate but recognizing landmarks and the position of the sun is helping quite a lot. We make sign posts everwhere with names of
The only mod I installed is FuelEternal so that my torches are always lit, I use them a lot along paths and shores so it's easier to navigate to in case of bad weather or when lost. I tried Speedypaths but soon found out it's not really needed as I already have a good reason to use paths anyway.
Some other things I noticed:
– I was afraid I wouldn't get my "building fix" in a nomap/noportals run but I'm actually building more than ever, although not as detailed (which is maybe a good thing as it prevents myself from getting carried away building crazy castles). There's always a need to build outposts as we move forward.
– It's comical how bad I am trying to orientate myself in a dense forest… several times I was 100% sure I crossed the island in a straight line just to find myself back at almost the same spot as where I started. Just chasing a single boar for a while makes me completely lose sense of direction.
– Coop play is even more hilarious now as we're often shouting "where the hell did you go?" to eachother even if we're trying to stay together. Add some thunderstorm in the mix at nighttime and chaos ensues.
All in all I can't recommend it enough! Looking forward to start sailing away from the starting island to get lost once again
