I have an exploration build but I’ve added counter measures in the instances where I get pulled into combat. Is this a good strategy?

Ok so the TLDR version is that I suck at combat. I have a HOTAS and I think I’m ok with it but I suck at combat. Like any kind of air combat games I haven’t been especially good at, I guess, using space strategically. Needless to say I never even managed to make it past the combat tutorial.

Anyway. Recently I finally upgraded from my sidewinder (goodbye Slippery Pig, you served me well) to an Asp Explorer and am actually about to head off on my second expedition into the black. But I got pulled into combat and panicked and died and had to pay like a cool million insurance excess. idk sometimes the pay is worth the extra threat level, I’m pretty good at breaking interdiction. And I’m always a sucker for checking out a signal

I’ve outfitted with ECMs and Chaff Launchers and have gone on a few practice runs to get used to the new button mapping. My idea is to use the countermeasures to buy me time while waiting for my FSD to boost.

So the question for combat veterans, is this an ok strategy for someone who doesn’t do combat? Is there better things I should be doing instead?Skipping the obvious answers like get good at combat or not do things that can get you into it.
