I just killed my first troll and I nearly had a heart attack (tips request)

I am a total noob at this game right now. I have 6 hours in, about 12 in-game days and I just defeated the first boss. I'm feeling pretty comfortable with the tools I have. I'm using the flint axe leveled a few times with a crude bow that is also leveled. I have a nice base near the water in the meadows and I'm starting to build other little houses along the way as a supply line. The nice crow or raven helper tells me to venture into the forest and I feel ready. I'm mining some tin by the water and I get smacked 10 feet by this troll. I die pitifully trying to run away. I'm pretty pissed. So, I gathered my stuff and find that stupid troll and kill him with about 25 arrows with my crude bow. Jumping, running, crying. I finally killed him and I feel so accomplished.

UPDATE:
Thank you for all of the great tips. I killed another troll earlier today. Kitting, used the fire arrows and ran around the forest. Only got hit once.
