The real problem with Gwent

the witcher and ciri gwent

So, I've been playing Gwent for a while now, and I have quite a bit of experience in other CCGs. I've also been browsing this sub, and seeing a lot of complaints about certain decks: enslave NG, Reavers, Madoc, etc.

I was a bit puzzled at first, because these decks didn't seem broken or super-strong on first glance, but they actually did have an absurd win rate and are generally hard and suffocating to play against.

Then, I started paying attention to the details that made them strong, and think I found it.

The real reason most broken decks are broken is the following: a shitload of tutors.

Drawing specific cards from your deck, returning cards from the discard stack, and the mother of all tutors being Jan Calveit, which basically guarantees you awesome draws for the rest of the game.

Think about it for a second. NG wouldn't be half as strong if they were regularly getting stuck with a hand full of shitty special cards.

Reavers wouldn't even be viable if they didn't have a guarantee of drawing Reavers from the deck.

Even the Viy nightmare of a couple years ago, which made me quit Gwent after a week of playing in 2021, was solely based on a crazy strong reverse tutor.

Also, most of the decks that are cool, but not viable right now, are that way because of tutor lack. Looking at you, Vampires, regularly getting stuck with fleders without bleed and Elder being the last card of the deck.
