First trip to Colony Questions

Yesterday my friend and I were chatting about deep space exploring, but before we do such a thing with "no destination", we decided to hit the colony first, to experience a long journey before we deep space explore
What do we need to know and what should we enjoy in the colony before we come back to the bubble?
What should we take?

Dunno why he said we should bring collector limpets, is repair 5D enough or should we take 5A?
Also someone told us that Guardian Module only protects against enemy fire, what should we put in that military slot? does hull reinforcement work against impact on bad landings etc?

we plan to do this trip in one or two weeks so we are not in a hurry, int he meanwhile we build the ship
