Valheim can do me dirty, a lot, but I realized when dying far away from my base it usually provides me with the best memories. It's always an adventure…
A friend and I went to face Moder, and we set up a portal close by, but it was ultimately destroyed and we both died. We both sailed back with lesser gear with the intent to grab our gear and get out alive. I set up a port pretty far off, just to be safe, but we kept dying by getting ganged up by Drakes, Wolves, Stone Golems, and Moder. At this point, my friend gave up and I was the one in charge with getting our gear back. After every death, I kept moving the portal up a little more so the run wouldn't be so long. I had the portal on the edge of the mountain and meadows, and on my 4th or 5th attempt, I decided to clear the area and move the portal up the mountain. As soon as I took down my portal (literally 2 secs after I took it down) I had an event where a pack of wolves jumped me. I panicked and wasn't able to deploy my portal again and I quickly was surrounded and died. Valheim really did me dirty this time. I finally got our stuff back on the following attempt, and we both defeated Moder and returned home.
Confidence was high after that Moder kill, so I wanted to check out a goblin village I had spotted a while ago before we both logged off. I had set up a portal a decent way off in advance (maybe 100 yards give or take). As we both started walking toward the camp we get attacked by a Troll, which was no problem, but it attracted a group of 4-5 goblins that were giving us the business. We tried to retreat to the portal but that was a bad idea since we both died as well as our portal being destroyed. This one really hurt since it was so far away from our base.
So here I am, on another journey to retrieve our items. I spent 2 days sailing mostly uncharted waters trying to find shortcuts and explore at the same time. This time I had Odin's blessing. The wind was always at my back and no Sea Serpents. It was the most peaceful journey I had. I finally got our things back and all was right in Valheim. As much as I hate dying, I realized the most memorable moments have always been trying to retrieve my body. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and that's the beauty of it. I love this game.
